From the Azura Benguerra Team - July 2018
Once again, the FIFA World Cup has stirred up millions of passionate soccer fans around the globe. But it could be argued that Africa is home to the most enthusiastic supporters of the beautiful game. No matter where you go on the continent, you’re bound to come across a band of children (or adults) chasing a well-worn football across a field with a crowd of supporters cheering them on.
It should come as no surprise then that Benguerra Island has its very own league which consists of teams from the surrounding lodges and islands, including Azura Benguerra Island. Matches usually take place on Sunday afternoons and are considered an important event by members of the local community.
Guests staying at Azura Benguerra Island are welcome to attend the weekly match to lend their support to Azura’s team. Football fans can join in the fun or simply sit back and enjoy the action from the sidelines. We set up a tent with refreshments and the result is an afternoon of great entertainment for everyone.
If you can’t bear the thought of missing out on any of the 64 FIFA World Cup matches taking place in Russia, the good news is that you will be able to watch them on the big screen at the hotel. While you won’t miss a minute of the action, it’s hard to beat the experience of watching a live game, surrounded by other football fanatics. Once you’ve attended an Island Soccer Match and witnessed the fervour of our local teams and supporters, you’ll understand why they call it ‘soccer fever’.
