All our game drives are in custom made LandRover 4 x 4 vehicles that have open sides and raised seating, ideal for comfortable game viewing and photography. The cars hold from 2-6 people, so the whole experience is a very personal one. Game drives are best taken from sunrise, accompanied by a bush breakfast, then again late afternoon, loaded with sundowner snacks and drinks. We are not constrained by time or distance, our guides are the best trained in the Selous, and will take great pride in showing you all that this vast reserve has to offer.
Walking safaris offer guests the rare chance to get up-close and personal with the 'little five', as well as learn about the relationship between flora and fauna, and the medicinal values of the plants that thrive in the Selous. A highly educational and uniquely enlightening experience, walking safaris follow the tracks, sights, smells and sounds of animals big and small into the wilds of Africa, accompanied by your guide and an armed Park Ranger.
Night Game Drives
The Selous Game Reserve is one of only a few locations in Tanzania where night drives are permitted, and Azura is the only camp in the reserve to offer this unique experience. As the light fades and predators shake off the heat of the day and become more active, enjoy the exhilaration of driving through the bush in search of them. Witness leopard, lion and hyena on the prowl for their prey. It is also an excellent opportunity for spotting smaller cats such as civets and genets. A Park Ranger accompanies these drives and additional Park fees may apply.
The Selous is a spectacular birding destination with over 440 bird species being recorded. The Great Ruaha River where we are situated acts as a life force for abundant wildlife including a large listing of endemic, aquatic and migratory birds. Some birds to look out for include the Fish Eagle, Goliath Herons, African Skimmer, White-crowned Lapwing, Spotted-flanked Barbet, Palm-nut Vulture, Chestnut-backed Finch-lark, Open-billed Storks, Golden Pipit and the Rock Pratincole. Our guides love sharing their knowledge of all the bird life that is located in the Selous.
Under the supervision of your guide you might also like to try your hand at fishing, as we have the best fishing spots in the Selous. The fast flowing Great Ruaha is home to many species of fish, including the Electric Catfish, and sought after Tiger Fish, which is a regular catch for our guests. The rapids right in front of camp offer up 'Squeakers' aplenty, so called because they produce a squeaking sound as a warning to both predators and competitors during spawning time, which makes them an exciting catch for even our younger guests.
We personalise your stay as a family, providing your own guide and vehicle whenever possible. As well as taking game drives, our guides will offer a variety of educational activities including tracking lessons, traditional bow and arrow making, bush walks around camp, and learning the Swahili names for our wildlife. All activities and meal times are of course tailored to your needs. This is authentic Africa as it is supposed to be, with Azura style luxury and attention every step of the way.
